If we have heard the word a great deal or have taken on various tasks in the church, we easily think that we know the Lord that much better. But Mark chapter 6 shows us that even in the place where the word is heard and the place where the word is preached, we must still examine our hearts. The people of Jesus’ hometown heard His teaching but rejected Him, and Herod heard John’s words gladly but did not follow them. The disciples worked with the authority of the Lord and returned, but they did not understand the meaning of His breaking the loaves. Being near the word and believing that word and living by it do not automatically become the same thing.
