When the name of Jesus became well known, people said that He was Elijah or that He was like one of the prophets of old, but Herod said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” (Mark 6:16). Even while hearing of the things Jesus was doing, he did not recognize the Savior but judged, bound by what he himself had done. Following those words, the Gospel of Mark shows how John was put to death, and reveals that the problem of Herod’s sin had not ended as a past event.
