The Pharisees and the scribes saw some of Jesus’ disciples eating bread with unwashed hands. Because they were keeping the washing of hands and vessels according to the tradition of the elders, they made an issue of the disciples who did not follow that rule. What is in dispute here is not the habit of life itself of washing one’s hands before eating food. The problem was that they had made a rule handed down from men the standard that divides a clean person from an unclean person before God.
