Saying “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth” (Mark 4:30–31), Jesus took up the example of a single mustard seed. A small seed does not look like much on the outside. But what Jesus caused us to see was not only its small appearance at the time it is sown. He caused us to see even how it grows after it is sown, shoots out large branches, and the birds of the air nest under its shade.
