People tried hard to keep a man bound. When he broke the shackles and chains, no one had the strength left to control him. But that man did not become free just because he broke his bonds. The text conveys his condition as follows: “And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones” (Mark 5:5). The strength to break the chains that bound him from the outside and the ability to escape the domination that tormented him were entirely different. To this miserable man, Jesus came. No one could make him whole, but Jesus did not abandon him.
