While Jesus was teaching the multitude by the sea, He saw Levi sitting at the tax office. The Lord first called him, saying, “Follow Me” (Mark 2:14), and Levi arose and followed Him. It was not that Levi came forward after quitting his work as a tax collector and becoming a fine person; rather, the Lord came to him right there where he was sitting at the tax office and opened the way for him to follow. In those days a tax collector was a person pointed at with scorn, because he collected taxes from his own people, handed them over to Rome, and filled his own pockets as well. People think that He would call upright people, but the Lord, completely contrary to that thinking, called a man with many faults.
